Breaking Down Bonnaroo’s Stellar EDM Lineup For 2019

The Bonnaroo lineup came out this morning, giving festival lovers another event to fawn over. With everything from Phish to Post Malone to Grand Ole Opry to RL Grime on the lineup, there is truly something for everyone to enjoy.

But how does the electronic lineup compare to the rest of the festival? Or even other festivals for that matter? Let’s take a deep dive on the four-day festival lineup and find out what it’s all about.

Bonnaroo starts on Thursday, which, separate from a lot of other major music festivals in the summer months, gives attendees an entire extra day to have fun and experience new sights and sounds. A lot of music and other activities will be going on in the campgrounds on Thursday, as well as a pretty stellar EDM lineup to kick things off.

Space Jesus b2b Eprom b2b Shlump will no doubt be the highlight of the day, though forgetting about 12th Planet or Sunsquabi will certainly earn you demerits. Eprom will also perform a solo set, with Hekler bringing up the rear for a well-rounded, though bass heavy, first day.

The second day of the festival is absolutely stacked with talent, as well — I know we’ve been overusing the word lately with all these lineup announcements coming out, but it’s certainly applicable here. Griz and RL Grime serve as de facto headliners for Friday, but there’s plenty more. Griz will host the super jam this year, which will quite simply be divine. NGHTMRE, Girl Talk, Liquid Stranger, Medasin, Ducky, Mersiv, and Crooked Colours will likely round out the Other Stage lineup on Friday.

Saturday brings one of dance music’s biggest act to its main stage: Odesza. The melodic, drumline-accompanied phenomenon of a group has far outgrown any of the smaller dance tents, as we clearly saw at Coachella last year. Zhu will also likely escape the tent, but probably won’t make the main stage. The Other Stage will likely be headlined by Gramatik on Saturday, with help from Space Jesus, Tokimonsta, SNBRN, Whipped Cream, Memba, and DJ Mel.

Sunday, the final day, looks to be a little lighter on dance music than the rest of the weekend, but only in quantity. As far as quality is concerned, it measures up. We might see Illenium on Roo’s main stage, but he won’t fit in the Other Stage anymore. The rest of the dance music lineup is comprised of G Jones (note: Space Jesus, Eprom, Shlump, Liquid Stranger, G Jones all on the same lineup – there’s a clear pattern here), Two Feet(maybe at Other stage maybe not), AC Slater, CID, Dombresky, and Iglooghost.

And (as if all that wasn’t enough already) all of this fails to mention the crown jewel of EDM at Bonnaroo – the Kalliope stage. Bonnaroo has no curfew – it’s “24/7,” and unlike most other stages this one goes till SUNRISE every night. Who will play? We won’t know ahead of time – it’s ALL surprises. 2018 featured a sunrise set from Kaskade, and past years have featured the likes of Skrillex and other big names. So we might not know ahead of time, but you can bet your money there will be a great mix of well-known names and surprises atop Kalliope till the wee hours of the morning.

All of this to say, even if you neglected everything other than dance music (which we don’t recommend, but you do you), you’d still experience a wide variety of artists and acts. While there are bound to be artists you feel deserve to be on the lineup or some you simply just wish were on it, that doesn’t diminish the fact that the dance music lineup is strong.
