Painter and Gorilla Biscuits guitarist Alex Brown has died, as ArtForum reports and his bandmates confirm via social media. According to ArtForum, Brown passed away following an aneurysm. He was 52 years old.
A seminal group in the New York hardcore scene, Gorilla Biscuits formed in 1987, releasing their self-titled EP the following year on Revelation Records. The band’s lone LP Start Today came out in 1989. A series of singles and EPs from the band followed, including A New Direction and Another Direction (both from 1992), and At the Matinee, which was released in 2006 after the group had disbanded twice (eventually reuniting in 2005).
Brown studied art at the Parsons School of Design in New York City, according to Artforum. He exhibited his paintings at Feature Inc. in New York from 1998 until its closing in 2014.
