Johnny Marr has criticized former President Donald J. Trump after footage emerged of the Smiths’ “Please Please Please Let Me Get What I Want” being played over venue speakers at a rally in South Dakota. The song appears to be a new fixture of Trump’s warmup music, as political reporter Ben Jacobs notes. “Ahh…right…OK,” Marr wrote on X. “I never in a million years would’ve thought this could come to pass. Consider this shit shut right down right now..” When reached by Pitchfork, representatives for Marr offered no additional comment on the situation.

Marr was a loud critic of Trump even before his election in 2016. He now joins a list of artists who have condemned Trump’s use of their music that includes Rihanna, the Rolling Stones, and Steven Tyler, as well as the estates of Prince and David Bowie.
