Sampling is nothing new, especially in hip-hop, but something incredibly rare occurred this year. Rising rappers Juice WRLD, Tory Lanez, and Russ all used the same exact sample from Sting’s 1993 hit “Shape Of My Heart” on each of their projects this year. The three tracks in question are Juice WRLD’s “Lucid Dreams”, Tory Lanez’s “Pieces”, and Russ’ “Parkstone Drive”. While all three tracks, and rappers themselves, are wildly different, they interestingly all sample the “Shape Of My Heart” guitar melody. Technically, Juice WRLD’s iconic “Lucid Dreams” actually interpolates the “Shape Of My Heart” riff as opposed to straight sampling it. This is not the case of one producer reusing the same trick as “Lucid Dreams” was produced by Nick Mira, “Pieces” was produced by Play Picasso, and Russ himself produced “Parkstone Drive”. Across the board, Sting has a writing credit on each of the three songs and has even gone as far as to take 85% of the “Lucid Dreams” royalties due to the song’s success. It should be noted that, despite an ensuing legal battle of royalty disputes, Sting did praise “Lucid Dreams” as a “beautiful interpretation” of his original. Take a listen to “Lucid Dreams”, “Pieces” and “Parkstone Drive” below and let us know who flipped it best.
