Lil Nas X’s “Old Town Road” came out in December 2018, and went on to become a viral hit moving into 2019 with the help of thousands of user-generated TikTok videos and fan-association with the ever-popular Red Dead Redemption 2 video game. After making its debut at #19 on the Country Billboard‘s country chart, Billboard quickly decided to remove it, stating that the song does not embrace enough elements of today’s country music. Yet, the rapper was quick to enlist country star Billy Ray Cyrus for an official remix. The addition of the country legend on the track has further sparked the conversation of whether “Old Town Road” can be considered country, especially since Billboard’s decision was met with backlash from fans. Since its release just mere days ago, the “Old Town Road” remix has become one of the most popular songs in the country, already garnering 12 million streams on Spotify and 16 million on YouTube.
