David Berman has shared “Margaritas at the Mall,” another new song from his forthcoming Purple Mountains album. Hear it below. In a recent interview with Vish Khanna for Exclaim!, Berman described “Margaritas at the Mall” as “an existential song” concerning “cosmological disappointment.” He continued:

The world of commerce is a kind of a purgatory itself. The church created the doctrine of purgatory so people could do business. Purgatory really came up with capitalism and allowed people some religious freedom in a certain kind of way because they weren’t completely held back from money-lending or bankers.

Purple Mountains’ self-titled debut is out July 12 (via Drag City). It includes the previously shared “All My Happiness Is Gone” and “Darkness and Cold.”
