On today’s episode of Marc Maron’s “WTF” podcast, guest Mandy Moore opened up about her former relationship with Ryan Adams. In a New York Times report published February 13, Moore was one of the several women who came forward with allegations of abuse against Adams. Having been married to Adams between 2009 and 2016, Moore elaborated further to Maron about the alleged “unhealthy dynamic” between her and her former husband.
“I was living my life for him,” Moore recalled on Maron’s podcast. “It [was] an entirely unhealthy dynamic. I had no sense of self.” She continued, “I felt like I was drowning. It was so untenable and unsustainable and it was so lonely. I was so sad. I was lonely with him.”
Moore mentioned that she knew the relationship couldn’t “sustain itself” if she was working full time, implying that she took on smaller projects because of Adams’ alleged dependency. “I would do little jobs. It’s not like I completely stopped working. I would do things here or there, but it would become abundantly clear while I was working, things would completely fall apart at home,” she explained. “I couldn’t do my job because there was a constant stream of trying to pay attention to this person who needed me and wouldn’t let me do anything else.”
Ryan Adams appeared on “WTF” in 2017. When Moore told Maron that she listens to his podcast, Maron asked if she heard Adams’ episode. “I had to,” she said. “I was curious what he was going to say.”
Later in the program, Moore told Maron that she plans to record an album with her husband Taylor Goldsmith and Blake Mills during her hiatus from shooting “This Is Us.” After Maron asked her what the songs were like, Moore replied, “They’re very personal. I mean, I feel like I’ve lived a life in the last 10 years. I have got plenty to say.” Listen to the full interview here, starting around the 14:00 mark.
Moore and Maron never reference the New York Times report during the episode, because it was recorded before the article was published. In the Times report, Moore cited several examples of alleged psychological abuse from Adams tied to her music career. Through his lawyer, Adams told the Times that Moore’s characterization of their time together “completely inconsistent with his view of the relationship.”
Adams has denied all allegations of abuse levied against him. Following the New York Times’ report, Liz Phair and Karen Elson shared statements about their own experiences with Adams. The FBI has opened an inquiry over allegations that Adams sustained sexual communications with an underage fan. And most recently, his new album Big Colors has been pulled from its planned release in April.
