Medasin hit gold in 2018 with his debut album Irene. It’s hard to surpass gold, but damned if he’s not trying with his first track of 2019, “Mr. Skitters.”
Don’t let the name you’d give your pet guinea pig fool you, this track is smooth as butter and dreamy as Derek Shephard. (If you get that reference, it’s okay, we won’t tell.) This plays less as an intentionally composed song than as the result of an 8-hour beat session with a delicate analog synth. It’s the sort of hypnotic vibe and rhythm you imagine when you’re just about to transport into a different reality — bubbly synths, light strums against strings, panning sounds left to right, all little tasty morsels for your mind to consume.
