Pegi Young, a musician and Neil Young’s former wife, died on January 1 following a yearlong battle with cancer, a statement on Young’s Facebook page confirms. She’s survived by her children with Neil Young, Ben and Amber. After singing back-up on Neil Young’s tours, she started her career as a solo musician with her debut self-titled album in 2007. She released five albums and fronted a band called Pegi Young and the Survivors.

Inspired by their son Ben who was born with cerebral palsy, Pegi and Neil Young founded the Bridge School in 1986. The institution helps children with physical and speech impairments. They supported the school with an annual all-star benefit concert, which took place every year from 1986 to 2016. Pegi and Neil Young divorced in 2014. Her last album was 2017’s Raw.
