Porter Robinson‘s Second Sky music festival — even in its first year — proved itself as a truly unique and inspiring experience. Reflecting back on an amazing weekend, the master producer and curator explains in an interview with Billboard the spark and inspiration behind the 2-day event set in Oakland, California.

First year festivals come with their fair share of challenges. Second Sky had just as many factors playing into the production, but it was executed beautifully. With live performances from Porter Robinson (of course), his alias Virtual Self, Madeon, Cashmere Cat, G Jones, Chrome Sparks, and more — he and some of the artists he aligns with could shine. From the artists to the staging, the fans and the entire concept, Porter got it right.

Anyways, here’s what he had to say about his vision:

My hope is to give as much of a platform as I can to the music that I love, and as a bonus, I think it helps the audience understand me better.

And the highest compliment they received:

I think one of the highest compliments we’ve gotten has been from people gushing over the logistics. I didn’t think that was possible at a music festival.

Perhaps the biggest reason why Second Sky was so successful was the authenticity and thoughtfulness behind it. In the interview, he also explains:

It was merely, let’s put on this cool thing so I can play together with all my favorite artists. It really was as pure as that!

Second Sky returns next year and we can’t wait to see how the concept progresses. In the meantime, watch the performances from the music festival here.
