Between 1994 and 1996, a band called the Sundowners released three 7″ singles on the Drag City imprint label Sea Note. The band’s origins are unclear, and there’s plenty of speculation about who’s involved in the project. It was widely rumored, for example, that the 1994 Goat Songs EP was a collaboration between Will Oldham and Bill Callahan. Oldham has denied that he worked with Callahan on the project. Regardless of who’s involved, the band are back with the Ancient Cares EP, which is out April 5 via Sea Note.
Addressing the band’s history, Drag City remained cagey in the single’s accompanying bio:
Each one of these releases were so distinctive, each in its own way, that rumors immediately spread that each one was actually a Drag City act in disguise, slumming it on Sea Note! An insulting suggestion for The Sundowners themselves, whose shape-shifting abilities were one of the decade’s most underrated stories. Perhaps this is why the long gap between the third and fourth 7-inch?
Drag City’s representatives offered Pitchfork no further comment.
