U.S. Girls and Bootsy Collins have joined forces for a cover of Leon Russell’s “Superstar.” It’s part of A Song for Leon, a ten-song compilation honoring the late singer-songwriter. Check it out below.

Collins shared a statement about his relationship with Russell’s work:

Mr. Russell, was a musician’s musician. He came in through the back door and made his way to the front of the stage. His song writing had meaning & a way of touching people that were going through things in life. I admired his talent, his steadfastness & commitment to being & doing what he set out to do. He expressed himself as only he could. I am proud to be a part of this tribute to him.

U.S. Girls’ Meg Remy released a brief statement of her own. “I’ve long desired an answer to that burning question, ‘Don’t you remember, you told me you loved me, baby?,’” she wrote, continuing, “Bootsy’s imaged-reply is an unction. This cover is for anyone who is waiting on an answer.”

Orville Peck’s update of “This Masquerade” has also been released from the compilation, along with Margo Price singing “Stranger in a Strange Land.” A Song for Leon is out September 8 via Primary Wave, with the Pixies, Hiss Golden Messenger, and Bret McKenzie making appearances elsewhere across the collection.
