On “Saturday Night Live” last night, the show dedicated a debate skit to Weezer. In it, Matt Damon and Leslie Jones, new neighbors after the latter moves into the neighborhood, engage in an intense back-and-forth discussion about the band during dinner. Damon, a superfan, starts the conversation by getting excited that the release date for their upcoming LP Weezer: The Black Album was announced. Jones responds, “I’m just a little confused because Weezer fans know they haven’t released a good album since Pinkerton in ’96.” Check out the sketch below.

The two continue to trade their thoughts about the group. “Why don’t you grow the hell up and listen to Ratitude and Pacific Daydream. You just don’t understand what Rivers is going through right now,” Damon says. “Rivers doesn’t understand what Rivers is going through though,” Jones retorts. As the conversation escalates, personal insults begin to fly. The argument wraps up with one final back and forth. “Weezer died when Matt Sharp left,” Jones says. “Weezer didn’t start until Scott Shriner got there,” Damon responds. Rivers was a fan of the skit—see his tweet below.

The band’s new LP, The Black Album, is out on March 1 (via Crush/Atlantic). The album will include the previously released singles “Zombie Bastards” and “Can’t Knock the Hustle.” Their last LP, Pacific Daydream, came out in 2017.
